What should we do today?
When my wife and I first started dating, we were faced with the question that I’m sure everyone in a relationship has asked: what should we do today? Six years ago today, I suggested to go on a run. So on Valentine’s Day of 2010, we went to Crystal Cove State Beach in Laguna Beach, CA, caught an amazing sunset, and thus began our itch for adventure.
Our next hike was at Peter’s Canyon Regional Park in Orange, CA a week later and we stumbled upon it driving around looking for a place to run. I thought to myself, there has to be a book about places to hike in OC. I did a quick Amazon search and there was! I quickly picked up a copy of Jerry Schad’s Afoot and Afield: Orange County.
I love the way that Jerry Schad describes each landmark and points of interest of each hike to simulate a self-guided tour with a plethora of information. His description is very personal, making each hike more enjoyable with his commentary (unfortunately, Jerry Schad passed away in 2011, but we still use this book to this day.) Of course, there are numerous resources online where you can also find hiking ideas for free.
3 Steps for Exploring Locally 4Two
To supplement our adventures, we kind of developed a simple system that allowed us to explore all of the opportunities around us. Here is our three step system:
1. Pick a Hike
- Using Afoot & Afield Books- Los Angeles, Orange County, or San Diego
- ModernHiker.com
- Get Fit: 10 Sites To Find Best Walking, Running & Hiking Trails by MakeUseOf.com
2. Pick a City and/or Local Attraction
- Go to Google Maps, search a local city you’ve never been to and type in anything you might want to do: farmer’s market, museum, record store, etc...
3. Pick a Place to Eat
- This is my favorite part.
- Find a place from food bloggers: Los Angeles, Orange County, or San Diego examples
- Find a place from Yelp
- Find a place on Google Maps
You can start off with any step and build your adventure around food, location, or hike!
